After battling a severe recurring sinus infection for more than 6 months, I had reached a point where medications weren't helping the problem or the resulting facial/head pain. My primary care physician just continued to prescribe antibiotics, and I wanted a real solution.

I contacted Capital Otolaryngology on the recommendation of another medical professional, and I'm so glad I did. The office staff was extremely helpful, even contacting me prior to the appointment to explain my insurance benefits and costs for potential tests and scans that might be ordered during my visit. When I arrived, the front desk was friendly and personable, and told me the name of the nurse that would be seeing me prior to my appointment with Dr. Slaughter.

Erica (Dr. Slaughter's nurse) introduced herself and took me for a CT scan right there in the office. The scan was ready immediately, and based on the scan, Dr. Slaughter was able to make a quick (albeit unpleasant) diagnosis: fungal sinusitis. He explained how mold spores can actually take up residence in the sinus cavities, and that many cases of recurring sinusitis are actually due to fungal infections, which is why antibiotics won't help. Since my allergy to molds exacerbated the issue, I had a pretty bad case, and the most efficient solution was surgical removal of the nasty stuff. Since he was already going to be in there, we also discussed surgical repair of my septum, which had been badly broken years before, and never healed the way I'd hoped despite multiple surgeries by another doctor in Georgia. We scheduled both surgeries for about a week later.

The day of the appointment, Dr. Slaughter stopped by to see me during surgery prep. He explained the procedure again, and made sure I understood what was going to happen, how long recovery would take, etc. Once I was out of surgery, he was careful to make sure my boyfriend was clear on my follow-up instructions.

Dr. Slaughter did not pack my nose after surgery, which was a great relief. (I'd already experienced that after past surgeries and hated it.) I expected to have severe dark bruising around the eyes and nose after this surgery - and was even given instructions on how to minimize swelling, etc. by Dr. Slaughter and his staff. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I didn't have an ounce of discoloration or bruising after the surgery. Nor did I have any scarring. Swelling was minimal. Above all, it's been almost a year since that surgery, and I haven't had a single issue with sinusitis, or a single sinus headache, since. Coming from a time where I basically lived with a sinus headache 24/7, it's more than I could have hoped for.

Beyond his surgical expertise, Dr. Slaughter seems to genuinely care about his patients. He always took the time to talk to me about work, offered a genuine (kind -not smarmy or inappropriate) compliment or two, and injected his special brand of humor into every appointment.

I would emphatically recommend Dr. Slaughter and his office to anyone with a need for an ENT in the Austin area. In fact, I work for a personal injury practice, and when our clients need facial or otolaryngological procedures done as a result of an accident, I insist they be treated at Capital Otolaryngology.
