Just read the review two weeks previous to this one. I was looking up service times as I am an occasional, but not frequent, participant in services. I am also new to Austin, having moved here three months ago in November of 2014. I experienced some of what John described, but I also found that the women I went out of my way to talk to, especially the senior minister, membership coordinator, and social activism coordinator, were quite happy to engage in lengthy conversations. (I talked with some men as well, but not in an official capacity.) For many of us, our default is to be reserved. That may be what was happening the Sunday that John visited. Neither he nor others made the first step to reach out a hand in friendship. Ideally, there would be someone to spot and welcome visitors, but I also recognize that I have some responsibility in that process. I am not a member of this congregation and have no bias in favor of or against them. I am just describing my experience, which was mostly positive. My choice to not participate more fully has little to do with anything I experienced or didn't experience while visiting. It has more to do with what is going on in my personal life and my interest in other spiritual traditions, such as Zen Buddhism, which offer services at competing times.
