  If you’re looking for a very dive oldshool vibe then this is great, owner is nice and maybe you can catch a game of chess. However the brisket was tough and flavorless, sauce was watery. If you are a germaphobe then this establishment is a no go.

  My nieces and nephews were visiting Austin, TX from Plano, TX and they wanted BBQ. I didn’t want to go to the typical, wait-in-line tourist option, I wanted something old skool with character! Sam’s was the perfect choice! The place looked as if it was ready to collapse but the ‘Q’ inside was worth taking the risk! Once I entered, passed the screen door, into the screened-in porch, the owner, Brian Mays, immediately said, “I know you!!” Whilst he was trying to figure out how he knew me, I ordered 1 lb of brisket, a couple of lbs of pork ribs and sausage, potato salad, and beans. If one wishes refreshments with authority (alcohol), it’s BYOB, Shiner Bock paired well with our mini-feast. The beef brisket was seasoned well however it was a bit on the dry side and the beans were a little too sweet for my taste but the rest of the food was great. Okay, mystery solved, Dr Mays rushed out to the screen-in porch, remembering how he knew me, 20 years ago we met, standing in line at a once great BBQ joint in Huntsville, TX.
